The 2017 harvest started early, following a summer of heat spikes and a growing season that began with significant rain, ending a five-year drought. While the heat waves were a concern, retained water in the quenched soils helped us maintain vigorous vines and plump, juicy clusters of fruit through the growing season. A series of wildfires at the beginning of October made international headlines, but the early harvest ensured that all the grapes for our To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon were picked and in the cellar before the fires began. Fruit for this blend was picked between September 26th and October 3rd.
In 1966, Robert Mondavi chose the To Kalon Vineyard as the home for his new winery, remarking that “It was a vineyard with a distinguished history and a magical nature. Ideal soils, sunlight and rain – to my eye, the vineyard was a treasure.” Walking this vineyard daily during harvest as we watch the gentle ripening of each block, the truth of his observations is apparent. It is indeed both a distinguished and a magical place. The To Kalon Vineyard lies in West Oakville where low fertility, well-drained soils combine with optimal sun exposure to yield rich, complex flavors and impeccable fruit maturity.
